Increasingly higher WPC-80 prices are pushing food whey prices higher as well

Whether the reader was at ADPI in the US or at Vitafoods in Europe, discussions at both events centered around the protein boom and its transforming impact on global dairy markets. While WPC-80 prices are breaking records at EUR 25 per kg and beyond, all other products in the whey domain are now also pulled up to higher and higher price levels. Feed whey prices are still at EUR 1540 delivered the Netherlands, but food SWP for instance is now traded at EUR 1750 ex works and higher. The market dynamics are somewhat complicated however, with many requests for offers but very little confirmations as yet. At the dryers SMC is still prioritized over SWC so availability remains limited.

Americas

A wide price gap occurred between locally traded product and SWP for international markets

SWP prices trade on average around USD 0.70/lb (1545/t) ex works, but there is a wide range depending on the destination. US origins became the preferred option in many export markets towards the end of April when EU prices quickly appreciated. International buyers were – and to some extent still are – willing to buy at levels of USD 0.70/lb. However, in early May the market calmed down again and local trades in particular dropped to price levels in the low USD 0.60s/lb. It is still difficult to find a home for lower tier product in the domestic market, hence the much lower prices for domestically traded product.
